book design, editorial design, layout design
2023

The Gwangju Uprising, known in Korean as May 18, took place in Gwangju, South Korea, in 1980. The uprising was a response to the coup d'état of May Seventeenth that installed Chun Doo-hwan as military dictator and implemented martial law.

The cover and end paper, showcased on the right as a black spread, are thoughtfully designed to reflect the layout of the May 1980 calendar, specifically highlighting the date range of the incident. Similarly, the narrative structure of the book meticulously follows the timeline of the incident, unfolding each event in chronological order.

Images and texts are placed separtely. between each sepread, a black page which is about 75% of the width of the page of the text spread is inserted.
the image align close to where the corresponding part of the text is, enhancing the flow of the text and convenience.

Classifying spaces specifically for photographs and text ensures that significant images can be prominently displayed across an entire spread or page.
